We passed our first three years in Burkina Faso without a single member joining. However, after three key members joined, the gates opened and we experienced rapid growth.

very similar experience,
we also went through 3 years of zero in Zambia and likewise suddenly 3 new members opened the gates

In my opinion, I think that when they saw single people in the centre, they couldn't really see a future for themselves, but with Kenichi Ito had his wife join him, members/students could begin to understand how the DP was being lived. Words might be inspiring, but the lifestyle was more convincing.
